Episode 4: The Business Trip Pretend

The private jet touched down at Teterboro Airport just after 2 PM. Charles Harrington and Emma Bennett had flown to New York for what was supposed to be a straightforward final negotiation with Viktor Lang, the notoriously old-school founder of Lang Capital—the last major holdout for the Meridian acquisition.

What should have been a simple day trip had turned into an overnight stay due to Lang’s insistence on a “civilized dinner” to seal the deal. Emma had handled all arrangements meticulously: separate rooms at the Four Seasons, back-to-back meetings, and a return flight the next morning.

Nothing went according to plan.

First came the booking error. The hotel had somehow merged its reservations into the Presidential Suite—a sprawling 2,500-square-foot space with two bedrooms, a living room, grand piano, and panoramic views of Central Park. Only one suite was available. With Lang’s team already en route and no other five-star options in the city during a major conference week, they had no choice but to accept it.

Then came the dinner.

Viktor Lang, a silver-haired, sharp-eyed European in his late sixties, greeted them at the private dining room of Le Bernardin with a broad smile. His wife, Elena, was beside him. Within the first five minutes, the assumption was made.

“Ah, Charles! I didn’t realize you were bringing your lovely wife. How refreshing to see a power couple working together,” Viktor boomed, shaking Emma’s hand warmly.

Emma froze. Charles’s hand rested lightly on the small of her back—a gesture meant to be guiding, but it sent heat racing up her spine.

Before either could correct him, Charles made a split-second decision. Correcting the assumption now could derail the delicate negotiations. Lang was traditional; he trusted “family-oriented” executives.

Charles smiled smoothly. “Thank you, Viktor. This is Emma. She’s indispensable.”

Emma’s heart hammered. She forced a warm, professional-yet-intimate smile. “It’s wonderful to meet you both.”

And just like that, they were pretending.

The evening became psychological warfare against their own boundaries.

Seated side-by-side in the intimate, candlelit private room, Charles and Emma played the part flawlessly on the surface. He ordered her favorite wine without asking—the deep Cabernet she preferred after long days. She instinctively reached over to adjust his cuff when it brushed against a water glass, a gesture so natural it made Viktor chuckle approvingly.

“You two make a striking team,” Elena said, eyes sparkling. “How long have you been together?”

Emma’s thigh brushed Charles’s under the table. Neither pulled away immediately. The contact burned.

“Long enough to know she’s the best decision I ever made,” Charles replied, voice low and convincing. His hand rested briefly on Emma’s knee under the table—a steadying gesture for the performance. Emma’s breath hitched. The warmth of his palm through her silk dress felt dangerously real.

It’s just an act, she screamed internally. Play along. Close the deal. Do not think about how good his hand feels.

Charles’s own thoughts were a storm. This is necessary. Professional necessity. Yet the scent of her perfume, the soft curve of her shoulder exposed by the elegant dinner dress she’d packed, and the way she leaned slightly into him for the role were testing every ounce of his control.

As the tasting menu progressed—scallops, caviar, perfectly seared branzino—the conversation flowed. Emma impressed everyone with her command of the Meridian details, seamlessly supporting Charles’s points. Viktor was visibly relaxing, warming to the “couple” dynamic.

At one point, Charles told a carefully curated story about “how they met” in the office, turning their real professional history into something softer, more romantic. Emma played along, laughing at the right moments and even adding a charming detail about Charles’s terrible taste in office coffee—earning genuine laughter from the table.

Underneath the table, their legs remained pressed together. Every small shift sent sparks through both of them.

By dessert, the deal was essentially secured. Viktor clapped Charles on the back. “A man who values his partner this much? I know I’m investing with the right person.”

When the Langs finally departed just after 11 PM, the act dropped the moment the car door closed behind them.

The silence in the back of the blacked-out Escalade was deafening.

Emma stared straight ahead, cheeks flushed. Charles sat beside her, his large frame taking up more space than usual in the confines of the luxury SUV. Their shoulders touched with every subtle movement of the vehicle.

The hyper-awareness was excruciating.

Emma could feel the heat radiating from Charles’s body. She noticed the faint shadow of stubble along his jaw, the way his broad chest rose and fell under the tailored navy suit, the expensive watch glinting on his wrist. Her mind kept replaying the weight of his hand on her knee, the low timbre of his voice when he called her “indispensable.”

It was pretend. Only pretend, she repeated like a mantra. But her body wasn’t listening. A low, forbidden warmth had settled low in her belly that had nothing to do with the wine.

Charles gripped his thigh, knuckles whitening. The suite. One night in close quarters. Emma in that dress, hair slightly loosened from the evening, looking far too beautiful under restaurant lighting. He had spent the entire dinner fighting the urge to trace the line of her collarbone with his eyes.

The Uber—actually a private town car—hit a gentle bump. Their thighs pressed firmly together. Neither moved away for several long seconds. The air grew thick, heavy with unspoken tension.

“Emma,” Charles said quietly, voice rougher than usual.

“Yes, Mr. Harrington?” She used his formal title like a shield.

He turned his head slightly. Their eyes met in the dim interior light. “Thank you for playing along tonight. It was… necessary.”

“Of course, sir.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “Professional necessity.”

The car pulled up to the Four Seasons. They rode the private elevator up to the Presidential Suite in charged silence. The doors opened into pure opulence: marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, a living area larger than most apartments, and two separate bedroom wings.

“I’ll take the left bedroom,” Charles said, keeping his tone strictly business.

Emma nodded. “Right one for me. I’ll have the revised term sheets printed for your review in the morning.”

They moved around the suite with careful distance, yet every glance, every shared space in the common area amplified the tension. Charles removed his jacket and tie, rolling up his sleeves—the same sight from their all-nighter that now carried new weight. Emma slipped off her heels, her bare feet sinking into the plush carpet, suddenly feeling far too exposed.

In the living room, they briefly reviewed tomorrow’s schedule. Standing close to examine the same tablet, Emma’s arm brushed his. The contact lingered. Charles’s gaze dropped involuntarily to her lips for a fraction of a second before snapping away.

“Goodnight, Miss Bennett,” he said, stepping back firmly.

“Goodnight, Mr. Harrington.”

Emma retreated to her bedroom, closing the door and leaning against it. Her heart raced. He’s your boss. This trip changes nothing. Yet she could still feel the ghost of his hand on her knee, hear the way his voice had wrapped around the pretend affection.

In his own room, Charles poured himself a scotch from the minibar and stood at the window overlooking the glittering city. The professional line had been tested tonight like never before. Pretending to be closer to Emma had felt far too natural. Dangerous.

He loosened his shirt, trying to ignore the memory of her leg pressed against his in the car, the subtle scent of her that still clung to his senses.

They had survived the dinner. The deal was nearly done.

But as they lay in separate beds in the same luxurious suite, both wide awake despite the late hour, the lingering warmth refused to dissipate.

The pretense had cracked something open.

And neither knew how to close it again.
